How do I block an IP address permanently?

This article applies to: BlackICE Defender.

SUMMARY

There is a way to block IP addresses permanently; however, this capability is not available via the user interface. It can be done by adding an entry in the file FIREWALL.INI.

DETAILS

In the installation directory, there is a file called firewall.ini.

In this file, you need to add an entry to the section [MANUAL IP ACCEPT]. For example, if you want to permanently block IP address 192.0.2.171 from your system, you will add the following line:

REJECT, 192.0.2.171, , 1999-08-26 21:40:08, PERPETUAL

After you make this addition to the [MANUAL IP ACCEPT] section and save firewall.ini, the changes should take effect within seconds. You should see 192.0.2.171 in the list of blocked addresses.

One special note: If you make changes to your firewall.ini file, you should regularly back it up (e.g. save a copy of it to firewall.sav).
