Fingerprinting is the technique of interpreting the responses of a system in order to figure out what it is. In particular, unexpected combinations of data are sometimes sent at the system in order to trigger these responses. This is because whether most systems may respond the same with correct data, they rarely respond the same way when sent data that the programmers didn't expect.
